My little sister has skin as white as snow
and lips as red as blood.
But when the magic mirror tells her
“You are the fairest in the land”
she doesn’t hear it.
I don’t think she even sees a reflection at all.
She ran away from home without even realizing she was running.
Lost in the forrest but it’s not her fault.
The evil queen who lives inside her head wanted her dead
and she tried.
“Take a bite.” Said the queen
as she handed her fifty sleeping pills disguised as an apple.
My sister took a bite.
She ate it all.
But she never fell asleep.
It’s easy to try to find the way out of the forrest
only to wonder deeper.
There is no clear path and the sun barely shines in.
Didn’t she pass that tree a few hours ago?
There was a cottage with seven beds
occupied by other kids who know their own evil queen.
It was refuge, however; temporary.
They said the path will be clearer after she leaves
but still, she has to go through the forrest to get out of it.
Little did she know this path is where she would meet the huntsman.
This particular huntsman was recently released from prison
and was in the forrest waiting for his crack.
He saw her skin as white as snow
and her lips as red as blood
and decided he would take everything intangible from her.
So he too handed her an apple.
It was a blunt laced with poison to make her fall asleep.
He took out his axe and used it to chop her up.
She told me she feels numb
which is a sad relief.
This is my little sister.
Her white skin is left without a glow
and her red lips have been dulled.
I don’t know how this story ends.

All three of us models are very successful in our careers, but because in the fashion industry ‘there’s only one black girl allowed’, they’ve made us compete to be that one girl. Beyoncé allowed us to show the world that we don’t have to fight against each other. She gave us the chance to see that we [black models] are far more powerful together.
